UPCAT Review vs. CET Review: Choosing the Right Path for College Aspirants in the Philippines
Preparing for college entrance exams is a crucial step for students in the Philippines, as these tests often determine admission to prestigious universities. Among the most sought-after exams is the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT), which has its own unique challenges. On the other hand, other College Entrance Tests (CETs) like ACET (Ateneo), USTET (UST), and DCAT (De La Salle) also require rigorous preparation. This article explores the differences between UPCAT-specific review programs and general CET review programs to help students make informed decisions.
1. Focus and Specialization
UPCAT Review Programs: These are tailored specifically for the UPCAT, focusing on the exam's unique format, content, and time constraints. They often emphasize subjects like Math, Science, English, and Filipino, as well as the UP-specific "right-minus-wrong" scoring system.
CET Review Programs: These programs cover a broader range of college entrance exams, providing preparation for multiple tests like ACET, USTET, and DCAT. They focus on general test-taking strategies and common subjects across exams but may not delve deeply into the nuances of each test.
2. Content and Materials
UPCAT Review: Materials are often designed to mimic the actual UPCAT, with practice tests and drills that reflect the difficulty and style of the exam. Some programs also include modules on essay writing, as UP occasionally requires essays.
CET Review: These programs provide a wider variety of materials to cater to different exams. While they may not be as UPCAT-specific, they offer comprehensive coverage of topics like abstract reasoning, logical thinking, and verbal ability, which are common in other CETs.
3. Teaching Approach
UPCAT Review: Instructors are often well-versed in the UPCAT's intricacies, offering tips and tricks specific to the exam. Programs may also include discussions on UP's culture and expectations to help students prepare mentally and emotionally.
CET Review: These programs focus on versatility, equipping students with strategies that can be applied across various exams. They may include time management techniques and stress-relief exercises to handle the pressure of multiple tests.
4. Target Audience
UPCAT Review: Ideal for students who are determined to secure a spot at the University of the Philippines. These programs are highly specialized and cater to those who want to focus solely on the UPCAT.
CET Review: Best for students applying to multiple universities. These programs provide a well-rounded preparation that increases the chances of passing various entrance exams.
Author's Experience
When I was preparing for college, I had a strong "UP or nothing" mentality and focused solely on UP. I ignored other schools and took only the UPCAT. However, as the exam results drew closer, I started having doubts about putting all my eggs in one basket. Nervous, I decided to apply to the other universities in the Big 4.
Unfortunately, it was too late for Ateneo and La Salle as their application deadlines had already passed. This left me with UST, where I managed to apply for the USTET. A few weeks before the USTET exam date, the UPCAT results came out—and thankfully, I passed! Relieved, I did not push through with my plans to take the USTET and fully embraced my dream of attending UP.
Reflecting on my experience, I realized how risky and impractical it was to focus exclusively on the UPCAT. Had I failed, I might have missed out on opportunities to enroll in other top universities. While extra exam fees can be a consideration, the benefit of having more options far outweighs the cost. If I were to give advice to college aspirants today, I would wholeheartedly recommend taking a general CET review program. It is a more practical choice, even if UP is your school of choice, because it prepares you for multiple exams and increases your chances of gaining admission to one of the best schools in the country.
Conclusion
Choosing between a UPCAT review program and a CET review program depends on your goals and priorities. If your dream is to join the University of the Philippines, an UPCAT-specific review program might seem appealing. However, considering the importance of keeping your options open, a general CET review program is often the more practical route. By preparing for multiple exams, you can broaden your opportunities and secure a spot at one of the country’s top universities.
